Steve Werner Jul 11, 2013 9:03 PM (in response to Ceencha)Here is a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of different font editors:

Ceencha Jul 12, 2013 2:30 PM (in response to Steve Werner)Dear Steve,
How can I contact you privately?
Thanks!

3. Re: Anybody know a program that combine fonts?
Steve Werner Jul 12, 2013 2:34 PM (in response to Ceencha)I don't answer private emails about issues brought up in the forum. I have no personal knowledge of any of the font editors I provided a link for. I just wanted to get you started.

P Spier Jul 12, 2013 3:13 PM (in response to Ceencha)Didn't I see one of the new feature in CC is the ability to make a Compound Font?

MW Design Jul 12, 2013 3:39 PM (in response to P Spier)Not certain a compound font is the answer.
From what I am understanding, characters from separate font files need to be combined into a single font file--please correct me if I am wrong, Ceencha.

7. Re: Anybody know a program that combine fonts?
Joel Cherney Jul 12, 2013 3:50 PM (in response to MW Design)A composite font will allow InDesign to treat a group of fonts as a single font - e.g. use the Japanese glyphs from one font and the Latin glyphs from another. I've never tried to set up a composite font with only Latin-script glyphs. I think that it ought to work, though.
I don't know if I'm understanding Ceencha's post correctly, because I've never seen a single font file that combined roman, italic, and bold glyphs:
Does anybody have a program that can make ONE font out of all three?
But if all that is necessary is a way to add a few accented glyphs to another font that doesn't have 'em, I think that a composite font would be sufficient, assuming that the end goal would be to have a font that worked in InDesign. And since Ceencha is posting here, I think that it would be a relatively safe assumption.

8. Re: Anybody know a program that combine fonts?
Ceencha Jul 15, 2013 1:00 PM (in response to Joel Cherney)Let me see if I can explain what I need:
I don't like having to SWITCH FONTS to make something Italic or Bold.
If they were all in the same font, I could just hit SHIFT++i to make it ITALIC.
Or is this a dumb idea?

9. Re: Anybody know a program that combine fonts?
Joel Cherney Jul 15, 2013 1:09 PM (in response to Ceencha)If the font is well constructed, then that's exactly how InDesign works. You have multiple font files, still, but if you're working in Minion Pro Regular and you hold down command and shift and whack the "i" key, then the italic font is applied.
If that doesn't work for you, then your font is basically broken. The font-family name inside the font has to be correct in all variants for this to work. (If I recall correctly, anyways - it's been a while since I did anything of the sort.)
If you go to Edit -> Keyboard Shortucuts and choose "Text and Tables" in the "Product Area" dropdown, you'll see that you have shortcuts for "Apply bold" and "Apply italic." Or, if you don't see 'em, then something is Seriously Wrong.

10. Re: Anybody know a program that combine fonts?
Steve Werner Jul 15, 2013 1:12 PM (in response to Joel Cherney)Joel is correct (he beat me to pointing that out). However, there are also many poorly constructed fonts where the font designer didn't bother setting up those font associations.
Also, occasionally, in fonts that have a variety of weights, calling out Bold (Cmd+Shift+B/Ctrl+Shift+B) might call out a semibold weight instead of the bold weight.

11. Re: Anybody know a program that combine fonts?
P Spier Jul 15, 2013 1:13 PM (in response to Ceencha)Well, that should already be possible if the font family has both roman and italic faces. ID doesn't "do" fake italic or fake bold like a word processor, but you can make a character style to add a stroke or slant type if you must, and you can make a keyboard shortcut to apply the style (though it has to use a modifier key and a key onthe numpad).
