    Need Help on Hardware Setup

    josephchau Level 1

      Hello I need your help on how to set up Hardware for Premiere Pro CS6

      Here is my PC info:

           * HP Z800 2x Intel Xeon 5560 (Quard Core) at 2.8 GHz each

           * 12 Gb RAM

           * PCIe x8 LSI MegaRAID 9260-4i (4-port, SATA-3 6.0 Gb/s)

           * 6 SATA-2 port (each 3.0 Gb/s) on motherboard

           * 1x SSD Samsung 840 Pro 512 Gb SATA-3 (6.0 Gb/s)

           * 2x SSD OCZ Vector 256 Gb SATA-3 (6.0 Gb/s)

          * 2x WD Velocity Raptor, 500 Gb SATA-2 (3.0 Gb/s)

           * 1x WD Black SATA-2, (3.0 Gb/s) 2.TB, Use as back-up

      Here is my plan for the Hard Disk

           (1) Use SSD Samsung 840 Pro as Boot Disk, contain OS and SW application

                 connect to SATA-2 (3.0 Gb/s) I understand I do not use full bandwidth of SSD

                That why I buy LSI MegaRAID 6.0 Gb/s to get full bandwidth for other 2 OCZ SSD

           (2) Use 2x OCZ 256 Gb/s connect to LSI MegaRAID card and config RAID-0

                this drive will be for Cach, page file (since it is Fastest drive in the system)

           (3) Use 2x WD Velocity Raptor connect to LSI MegaRAID, config as RAID-0

                 This drive will use for: project file, input video clip from my camcorder etc...

            (4) 2. TB WD use as backup and somthing else

      Your suggestion and help is greatly appreciated

      Best Regards

          Your drive plan sounds fine, although probably overkill for your current system.

          If you are looking for more speed running CS6 - that was not your question, but that may be why you are spending so much on SSDs and controller - then also consider that CS6 utilizes CPU, RAM, GPU, and of course drives sometimes all at once, so if your overall performance can be impacted by the weakest link in the hardware chain.

          Your current cpus, while expensive when new, are not that fast compared with newer cpus. Your RAM, at 12GB, would not be holding you back much for CS5. However, for CS6, 24GB/32GB/64GB setups are faster for many rendering workflows. Finally, you do not mention your current graphics card. Do you have one that supports the MPE hardware mode and if so, is it configured and working properly?

          Regards,

                   --> my question: could you explain what do you mean by that...???

            (2) I intend update RAM from 12 Gb to 24 Gb

            (3) Graphic card I have is: Nvidia Quadro K4000

            Best Regards

              Regarding:

              1) Sorry, overkill = more than is necessary. In this case more drive power than would be an even balance for your current hardware list

              2) Excellent!

              3) Good too!
