Have you tried properly uninstalling InDesign? If your running Windows, go to Add/Remove programs, if your running OSX, go to the Utilities folder > Adobe Installers and run the uninstall file.
Ahh, I should've mentioned I'm also fairly new to Macs as well (which is why I thought I could uninstall it by deleting it in the first place!). Thank you very much! I'll see if this fixes it. I'm optimistic!
You could try just taking the foilder back out of the trash, to restore it (becasue a reinstall probzably isn't going to fix your problem by itself -- see below), but if that doesn't work you'll probably need the cleaner tool: CS Cleaner Tool for installation problems | CCM, CS6, CS5.5, CS5, CS4, CS3 which will remove everything so you can reinstall.
And when things are reinstalled, see Crash | Launch, selecting Type tool
