    Storage Upgrade: Areca 1882iX-12-2GB + ASUS P9x79 WS ?

    ZeroG-Robert

      Ahoy storage nuts!

Please take a look or comment on the planned storage solution upgrade for my freelance editing/AE/3d rig.  Main goals are to both moderately increase capacity and maximize interactive and rendering speed in PremiereCC / AE CC.  No need of a multi-TB RAID at the moment- think shorts / 30 sec spots / Vimeo vs feature films here.  Looking to increase my geek score as well.

I built the bones of this comp last year and really skimped on the storage area.  Some new freelance/hobby projects are coming up that will require better performance than a single spinning external disk can provide (yes, the current storage is that embarrassing).  Looking at investing in the Areca 1882iX-12-2GB + battery BU with some new Sasmung SSDs and Seagate spinners, and a few SSD backplanes/cages for my case.

      Questions:

I don't think my MB is on the official support list for the 1882 but I read a review where the combo worked.  Is anyone using this combo?

I'm also wondering if it's OK to use both Intel RAID and Areca RAID simultaneously.  Intel RAID has worked really well for OS RAID 0 and I've even restored it from the system image backup a few times with no issues so was planning to keep that portion of my setup intact unless there are compatibility issues or major performance gains from switching.  I do not mind the risk since I backup.

Any thoughts on using Samsung 840 Pro's vs Sandisk Extreme II's for fast media  RAID 0 array?  Price is identical on Amazon but I would prefer whichever would hold up best in large stripe RAID if anyone knows...

      Side note:

Even with the current iffy solution for storage, it kicks the pants off of the expen$$$ive MacPros (64GB RAM, internal RAID 5, huge fiber SAN) I use at work for editing/AE.  My current half completed PC build has much faster interactivity and in real world testing about ties the MacPro for hardcore AE rendering with one external spinner. Plus, the cost even after this planned upgrade is far less than the mac solution.  Our I.T. guy at work is also a mac fanboy so we are firmly stuck in that delusional camp- that is at least partly to blame for my forays into the PC dark side at home
