Unable to uninstall Adobe Reader 8.3.1 from my computer

when I go to add or remove programs and select Adobe Reader 8.3.1 to remove it and ask me to confirm that I do want to remove the program, I receive the following message.

This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the parch package ixists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to revify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package.

There seems to be an update "Adobe Reader 8.3.1 - CPSID_83708" to the software. I'm not sure if this update is corrupt and is what's causing the problem. I have installed later version of adobe reader (11..0.03.) that seems to be working fine. when I installed this newer version I assumed it would automatically uninstall the older version but it did not. I need help on how to go about uninstalling the older version (8.3.1).
