    Crashing Continues

    kathydannelvitcak Level 1

INDesign crashes on me constantly, both CC and IND6. I don't mean 2-3 times on start-up, I mean repeatedly every single time I use it.

On an iMac, 10.8.4, have turned off all fonts except system ones, preferences are all set to default, brand new download and upgraded! And CC continues to Crash. IN6 crashed on me incessantly also and I tried every single patch and every single upgrade and every single piece of advice. Now CC is even worse. I worked on a file and crashed 32 times in a six hour span. Not kidding, wish I were. There is no rhyme or reason…takes 6-7 tries to get started (hangs, crashes on start-up every single time I open it). The  crashes when completely arbitrarily - the only thing that is constant from one crash to the next are my hot tears on the keyboard.

OK, what could be making this happen to SOME users and not all? I see rants and calm posts and please for mercy and updates here, but no answers that seem to work across the board. What could be the commonality?

My favorite responses are those who shame us for trusting in the program and actually having the audacity to USE IT and not using 5.5 until CC12 comes out. I love bright, shiny new and love enjoying the new stuff that updates offer, so I jump in and use 'em. I know it probably makes sense to not use the new versions when they first come out…but I want to see the new stuff.

Is there anything that can be done? I have spent hours on the phone with tech support and they could not figure out the issue. Ideas? Suggestions? Now it has become a personal challenge, as if IND-CC is taunting me and laughing at me.

      Thank you for any ideas.

You say you've done "everything," but we don't know what that is, really. Did you apply the patches from Crash | Launch, selecting Type tool? Did you export your files to .idml (Remove minor corruption by exporting)? Did you create a new user and try working with that account? Did you do a "safe" boot by holding down the SHIFT key during startup to keep extnesions from loading? Did you remove any font auto-activation plugins from ID? Did you deactive any other third-party plugins?

CS6 is normally not crash prone, so the odds are pretty good there is soomething about your system in particular that is causing the problem. CC has a number of issues, many font related.

Yes, I did every single one of those things. Applied patch, made no difference.

The files I exported into .idml from cc wil not open in CS6 or CS 5.5. every single one of them locks and freezes CS6. Now, none of the additional files I have opened in CC will save or close, as they all say background jobs are running.

            I did not have any font auto-activation plug-ins installed. I have no third-party plug-ins.

The Safe start in CS6 still crashes when I try to open any files - either the .idml or files created in CS6.

Does anyone know of tech support that can be hired for INDesign? I have been on hold for Adobe tech support for over and hour, as it rejected the time option I entered and then told me I had no othger tries - one try was all I got. Chat support told me (after stalking them all day) that they cannot help and I just have to stay on hold...

Since you are running on OS X we stand a chance of getting some useful information about what's going on from the OS. Please see Adobe Forums: InDesign CS5.5 Not Responding for instruction on generating a hang report, and converting the hang to a crash and getting that report as well.

And please try making a new user account and testing in that. It will help us a lot.

You need to restart the computer and use the new user to log in...
