I think its not even possible with air. i looked around in the net for that but didnt find anything.
a "workaround" may be, that you start a small socket (server) on the client (sure, not very elegant) and then let the small native (or java) program execute the windows application for you. Maybe its possible to use an java applet with special security settings...

That java idea may just do the trick, I hadn't thought of that but now you mention it I have see something similar done before.

I think this would probably work from a browser based swf as well.
Thanks Amy, good idea but will not work in my case as I need to start an applicatin and pass parameters to it.
In my case I am not trying to open a document or some datafile, I actually need to name the application I want to execute.
I think java may be the way to go.
For now Java is the way to go on this, though I'm really hoping AIR will have this eventually. I would not expect Flex to implement this, as it would greatly compromise the security model.
