1. Re: Does Adobe recommend 512MB or 1GB of GDDR5 memory when using Photoshop CC?
Curt Y Aug 10, 2013 10:47 AM (in response to Bob Redd)512 is minimium for 3D, and you know what that means, it is minimium needed.

Lundberg02 Aug 10, 2013 1:37 PM (in response to Curt Y)No one should have less than 8 GB these days, 16 is comfortable, 32 if your box will take it. RAM is cheap, fill up your machine.

Noel Carboni Aug 10, 2013 1:44 PM (in response to Lundberg02)I think Bob's talking about VRAM, Richard.
If you're buying for the future, more VRAM on your video card is better, though no one can really say for what yet.
Put another way, the current minimum requirement is 512MB. That's in code that's shipping today. What will it be in 2 years? I doubt it will be less...

gener7 Aug 10, 2013 1:46 PM (in response to Bob Redd)1gb good. 2gb better. Think of it as headroom in a car you will be driving long distances.A subcompact might be minimal, but you won't like the ride.
Photoshop also increases minimal requirements with each new version and if you plan to keep the gpu for a few years, you want more than bare minimum.

Bob Redd Aug 10, 2013 3:06 PM (in response to gener7)Thank you for the good advice. 1 gig or better is what I'll go for.

For most Photoshop usage, 512 Meg to 1 Gig of VRAM is fine.
For heavy 3D usage, I'd suggest investing in a card with 2 Gig or more.

Thank you for the renewed reassurance.
I saw a very, very substantial improvement in Photoshop 13.0.5 performance when I went from a video card with 256 MB to one with 1 GB of VRAM.
[EDIT: Though that was right after going from a non-pro Mac Book maxed out at 3 GB of RAM, to a 65-lb Mac Pro with 16 GB of RAM, I did have a week or two to run on the 256-GB old card on the Mac Pro.]
Since I never do any 3D or video stuf, I don't see a reason to upgrade to 2 GB of VRAM or more.

gener7 Aug 10, 2013 7:17 PM (in response to Bob Redd)I almost forgot, Photoshop is not the only software to consider. It also comes in handy for gaming and dedicated 3DCG software. I'm not certain about how external monitors use video memory, but if the resolution is above 1920 x 1080, then the extra vram should come in handy as well.
