Can you show us a picture of what you want? It's almost certainly either a Drop Cap or a Nested Style
Two paragraph styles - the Non drop cap is the parent style. Play around with your text (size, styl etc., than with the curser in the text, right click the style (it now has a + symbol) and select Redefine Style - all copy (that has not been overridden) will change.
The Drop Cap style is based on the first style
We don't know yet if the initial cap is dropped or raised, or something else entirely.....

@daniel, yes, it's dropped cap, but i cannot parse that. I have one paragraph style for the whole text. Then i just mark the first part of the text, and change the initial cap (it's actually nothing more than this). Now I have a plus in the paragraph style list. I click on redefine and.. now the initial appears on every paragraph. The problem is simply, that all settings will be overridden.
edit: okay, i had to use the "based on" option in the initial paragraph style.. as i remember, i had done this some times before, anyway! ^^ i hope it will work now and forever
