Try saving as any of the three formats, RTF, DOC, or DOCx that it isn't currently saved in and see if one of them works better. If you have an earlier version of ID, it can help to import into that first, then export again to RTF or ID Tagged Text and import that into CS6. Word import has gotten more and more unreliable with each version.
thank you, peter. i tried that, as i do have CS2 on my computer. now there are new problems:
1. When importing the complete file into CS2 it only imports half and for some reason the rest doesn't import...
2. I tried importing the other formats into CS6 and it crashes every time, now...
Make sure ther are no tracked changes awaiting approval and do another save as to force a rewrite of the file. Try the other formats in CS2 as well.
For CS6, make sure you empty the InDesign Recovery folder (You'll have to show hidden files to see it in your user library or profile) before attempting to restart ID. Bad recovery data will just send you into a new crash.
Thank you, Peter. RTF worked fine into CS2 when I turned off the Track Changes feature.
