How do I close out IE?

I have tried MANY times to download the latest version of Adobe Flash Player. It goes so far and then says,"Please close the following programs to continue: Internet Explorer". Even though I have closed the program, it continues to give me the same message everytime. I am so frustrated because I need the Player to listen to some of the messages I have on Internet Explorer.
