1. Re: Photoshop cs6 frozen when using the liquify tool
Noel Carboni Aug 26, 2013 10:52 AM (in response to ronze98)As I recall there's a modifier key you can hold down to force Liquify to use the CPU only (avoiding possible GPU driver issues). I want to say it's the Alt key (i.e., press and hold Option or Alt while selecting the Liquify menu item).
See if that works around the issue.
If it does, it's possible manipulating some of the Advanced GPU options in the Performance Preferences might get you a combo that does some GPU acceleration but avoids the problem. Remember to always restart Photoshop after making GPU preferences changes and before testing.

2. Re: Photoshop cs6 frozen when using the liquify tool
ronze98 Aug 26, 2013 2:44 PM (in response to Noel Carboni)Thanks for the suggestion. I tried disabling 'graphics processor' under preference->performance, restarted photoshop cs6, and still face the same issue - upon clicking cancel on the liquify dialog box, photosop just freezes. So it makes me wonder if there is something else going on? I tried checking windows event viewer, but no new event was logged when photoshop freezes. Any ideas how to tackle this problem?

3. Re: Photoshop cs6 frozen when using the liquify tool
Curt Y Aug 26, 2013 2:48 PM (in response to ronze98)Did it ever work? IF so reset preferences. With Win OS start PS and immediately hold down ctrl/alt/shift keys. If fast enough you will get a reset window.
THe liquify tool in CS6 takes a lot more GPU than it did in CS5.

4. Re: Photoshop cs6 frozen when using the liquify tool
Pete.Green Aug 26, 2013 2:55 PM (in response to ronze98)Hi Ron,
Are you sure that's the latest driver?
All of the drivers there point to a date in 2012, and the driver version at least 14.x.x.... I'd pull one of those down and see if it changes the behavior.
Let us know how it goes.

5. Re: Photoshop cs6 frozen when using the liquify tool
john worthington Aug 26, 2013 6:23 PM (in response to Pete.Green)Liquify may be crashing when writing the preferences or the last mesh. Try deleting the liquify preferences folder. On my machine the path is:
C:\Users\jworthin\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Plugins\Adobe Liquify CC\Photoshop
Deleting the application preferences does not delete plugin preferences.
Did this suddenly stop working?
Is your hard drive almost full?

6. Re: Photoshop cs6 frozen when using the liquify tool
ronze98 Aug 27, 2013 8:13 AM (in response to john worthington)Thank you for the replies.
Intel has a tool to check for driver updates and I am already using the latest one:
Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator Driver, Windows 7* 64, Windows Vista* 64, (zip) Installs graphics driver version 15.17.19.64.2869 (8.15.10.2869)
I was using cs5 before on windows xp on this same laptop. I recently upgraded to win7 and installed cs6 trial to test things out. On cs5, liquify did work.
I have tried deleteing the following folder, restarted cs6, but no help. My C: has 2gb of free space. I guess I will just go back to cs5.
{user directory}\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Plugins\Adobe Liquify CS6\Photoshop

7. Re: Photoshop cs6 frozen when using the liquify tool
Pete.Green Aug 27, 2013 9:39 AM (in response to ronze98)The page I linked for your driver shows a newer driver version and date... If the Intel tool is [incorrectly] reporting to you that you're up to date, I wouldn't trust a tool more than my eyes in this case.
Try the newer driver out at least, if it doesn't work, you can roll back the driver and pretend that didn't happen. CS5 didn't use the video card nearly as much with Liquify.

9. Re: Photoshop cs6 frozen when using the liquify tool
Fokus_Foto Dec 16, 2013 1:31 PM (in response to ronze98)I suddenly got this same issue, mid-session..
Had made 2 panoramas, used adaptive wide angle, then liquify, did the same on number 3, and now it keeps freezing on me every time!
I have updated drivers, even to a beta driver for my graphics cards (2x 2GB Radeon HD 5950, no crossfire enabled), MB drivers are up to date, nothing changed during the time I was using it when it suddenly stopped.. (And I've rebooted several times, and left it off for a few minutes, of course)
It works if I untick using GPU in preferences, but then adaptive wide angle wont work..
I need to get this back up and running asap - Any suggestions?

12. Re: Photoshop cs6 frozen when using the liquify tool
john worthington Dec 16, 2013 2:21 PM (in response to Fokus_Foto)Please try unplugging the monitor from the Radeon card with a single monitor attached as a test. So you will have a single card driving your two remaining monitors.

13. Re: Photoshop cs6 frozen when using the liquify tool
Fokus_Foto Dec 16, 2013 2:45 PM (in response to john worthington)Slight problem with that..
My computer is integrated/built-in into a massive desk/workstation, weighing over 200kg, and I can't physically get to the connections on the back without moving this beast..
Also, the monitors are mounted in such a way that it is very difficult to get to the cables, and the monitor on the card with just one connected, is my main display..
Not so practical for repairs/troubleshooting, but looks and works great..! ;-)
Anything else we can look at, or is this it?
If there is nothing else, I'll get my screwdrivers out and disassemble the monitor mounts.

14. Re: Photoshop cs6 frozen when using the liquify tool
john worthington Dec 16, 2013 2:59 PM (in response to Fokus_Foto)Maybe we can narrow things down with some questions:
What exactly is freezing and when does it happen?
How do you unfreeze?
Have you recently installed any software upgrades at all?
Changed the hardware configuration?
-
15. Re: Photoshop cs6 frozen when using the liquify tool
Fokus_Foto Dec 16, 2013 3:06 PM (in response to john worthington)What freezes:
Everything in PS, except minimize and maximize the program window
When:
As soon as I click the option to liquify (no new window pops up as it used to do)
How do I unfreeze:
Task manager - end task
Recent SW or HW upgrades/updates:
None, that I know of..
A week ago I uninstalled the USB drivers, and then reinstalled them, then figuring out it was a faulty cable to the card reader, but other than that only windows updates 4 days ago.
But again, it was working fine, used it (liquify) twice, then on the third photo it stopped working, and has not worked since, despite updating, rebooting and unticking scratch disks etc.

16. Re: Photoshop cs6 frozen when using the liquify tool
Fokus_Foto Dec 16, 2013 3:08 PM (in response to Fokus_Foto)Forgot: I use scroll wheel to resize, and that still works when it freezes.

17. Re: Photoshop cs6 frozen when using the liquify tool
john worthington Dec 16, 2013 3:17 PM (in response to Fokus_Foto)I think we are back to configuring your system to be less complex. Can you reconfigure it to just be using a single Radeon card somehow? For now it does not matter if it has one or two monitors attached.
-
18. Re: Photoshop cs6 frozen when using the liquify tool
Fokus_Foto Dec 16, 2013 3:27 PM (in response to john worthington)I took the monitor down and disconnected it, first in windows display config, then unplugged the cable.
Now liquify works with GPU ticked.
So, whats the next step?
I can't have my main monitor out of service because PS suddenly decided it didn't like it.. ;-)

19. Re: Photoshop cs6 frozen when using the liquify tool
Fokus_Foto Dec 16, 2013 3:40 PM (in response to john worthington)Also, while I'm at it: The marching ants have never marched on this system. Any ideas about that one?
I use a lot of complex selections in my work, and it would be a lot easier to spot missed bits if they marched..

20. Re: Photoshop cs6 frozen when using the liquify tool
john worthington Dec 16, 2013 3:41 PM (in response to Fokus_Foto)I suspect the ATI driver is crashing with this configuration. I have no idea why it worked initially. We (the PS team) will work with ATI to figure out what is going wrong and come up with a better solution. How long was the three monitor system working before you hit the freezing?

21. Re: Photoshop cs6 frozen when using the liquify tool
Fokus_Foto Dec 16, 2013 3:45 PM (in response to john worthington)157 days (installed PS CC then) computer has been running in this configuration and with the same hardware since summer 2011 (added the cintiq then) and since spring 2010 without the 3rd monitor.

22. Re: Photoshop cs6 frozen when using the liquify tool
john worthington Dec 16, 2013 3:58 PM (in response to Fokus_Foto)Extremely strange.
When did you last update the ATI driver?
It has a date of 20131129. Seems like it could have been just before you started to have trouble. Can you roll back (uninstall/reinstall) one version of ATI driver?
-
23. Re: Photoshop cs6 frozen when using the liquify tool
Fokus_Foto Dec 16, 2013 4:02 PM (in response to john worthington)The date in November is probably correct. I updated catalyst today after the problems started (not had these problems with freezing until today), but the driver date is still the same..
The roll back driver button is not active.
-
24. Re: Photoshop cs6 frozen when using the liquify tool
john worthington Dec 16, 2013 4:13 PM (in response to Fokus_Foto)You could uninstall the driver completely and then download an older driver from the ATI website I think they have 13.9, 13.10, and 13.11 all available there.

13.9 was the version I had when the problems started, and by the looks of it, have had since 29th November.
I will try to uninstall the driver like you said, and reinstall. Perhaps do the same with PS?
If that fails, system restore?
I will get on with what you suggest tomorrow, as it is 1.20am here now.
Many thanks for your help so far!

26. Re: Photoshop cs6 frozen when using the liquify tool
Fokus_Foto Dec 16, 2013 4:45 PM (in response to Fokus_Foto)I may have found the problem just now.
I use a small piece of freeware called Dexpot to keep a window always on top, transparent and click-through (used for making 3D illustrations from building plans like you would with tracing paper).
This software also creates 2-20 alternative desktops you can switch between. When I remembered this ( I don't use that feature) I thought it might cause problems for the drivers/GPU's.
I disabled this software, reconnected the monitor, restarted PS, and now liquify works with GPU ticked, just like before.
But I still have no idea what caused this, Dexpot has been installed for a few weeks and never caused a problem before..
I will keep digging, and reply again if the problem comes back.
Thanks again!

ronze98 Dec 16, 2013 5:54 PM (in response to Fokus_Foto)I was the OP of this topic. I end up install ps on a different machine and no longer encounter the issue. I am going to assume the first laptop - a fujitsu - is bad.

30. Re: Photoshop cs6 frozen when using the liquify tool
Ike Cronin Dec 17, 2013 11:12 AM (in response to john worthington)I have had a similar problem since I upgraded to Catalyst 13.9. It's definitely driver related.
The GPU usage is 100% in liquify, and PC becomes unresponsive for like 10 seconds as soon as I start moving on the screen.
The performance gets better once I disable GPU usage in PS>Performance menu.

31. Re: Photoshop cs6 frozen when using the liquify tool
john worthington Dec 17, 2013 11:31 AM (in response to Ike Cronin)That's odd, Catalyst 13.9 has been stable for most users. Can you install the earlier Catalyst driver to avoid the problem?
-
32. Re: Photoshop cs6 frozen when using the liquify tool
Fokus_Foto Dec 17, 2013 2:05 PM (in response to Ike Cronin)Thats not exactly the same problem I had Cronin, mine froze completely and did not unfreeze until i forcibly closed PS, but the mouse pointer and everything else non-PS remained ok throughout.
The performance gets noticably slower if I turn off GPU, as it is then only using CPU and not both, maybe you have a GPU with little RAM?
Catalyst 13.9 worked fine for 3 weeks, I use PS almost every day, never a problem until last night. Not had it again since I disabled Dexpot last night.
Will try re-enabling it and see if it causes problems again, but too busy to start playing about with this right now. Will write back if/when I find out more.
