attempting to transcode .mpgv files, XMP failed

I was given a hard drive full of files and asked to transcode them to be uploaded to vimeo (suggested settings).

I am currently having trouble with a bunch of files that have had their extensions changed (to .mov from I don't know what) or removed.

When I open them up in VLC the inspector lists them as MPEG-1/2 video (mpgv), Decoded Format Planar 4:2:0 YUV, with Audio as 2 streams, each PCM S16 LE (sowt)...

I've tried using Prelude, Adobe Premiere, and Adobe Media Encoder (CS6) with no luck.

When I try to ingest them in Prelude to send to Premiere the file fails with "Reason: Import XMP Failed!"

If I try to ingest in AME I get a failure "this is not an accepted codec"

I have searched for any info on this type of codec but I am at a loss...

I have tried changing the extension to .mpg, and was able to ingest (in Prelude, Premiere and AME), but what I got with each was a mostly green screen with some purple silhouttes. Not the image I wanted.

Does anyone know of a work around for this?? I really need to get these files transcoded ASAP.

      *I'm working on a mac.

      Thank you!
