It sounds as though you're trying to use File/Open to open a video file.
You don't open a video in Premiere Elements. You open a .prel project file.
You use Get Media then to add the video to your project.
I have open a new project.but when i go to the get media and chose an avi. file, it comes up with the error message of not a supported format or codex missing. the only ones it seesm to open are .mts files
What model of camcorder did this AVI come from and what format and resolution and is it?
If this video is not from a miniDV camcorder, captured over a FireWire connection, please open the file in Media Info or G Spot and post its resolution, frame rate and audio and video codecs to this forum.
the are two types of files, one from a JVC camcorder (.MTs) and other from Pentax Camera (.avi). Sorry but I am not that good with computors to find out the other info you asked for. What perplexes me is that it opens OK on the other PC with the same software. all the files were downloaded from SD card to hard drive. Just had a look at codex programes and all I got downloaded was a load of advetising and junk
Without more information I can't say for sure, but:
1) You'll need to ensure you have the latest version of Quicktime installed in order to work with the MTS files from your Canon. Then start a new project and set it up for Full AVCHD video. When you do this the program will automatically install the necessary codecs.
2) As for the AVI, it could be an MJPEG AVI, which is an iffy file to edit in Premiere Elements. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Installing the software that came with the camera can help.
Perfect, just installing Qucktime soved the problem.
