1. Re: Help connecting Rome with Adobe server
Steve Werner Sep 10, 2013 9:21 AM (in response to abigailthelibrarian)What is Rome, and what does this have to do with an InDesign forum?

2. Re: Help connecting Rome with Adobe server
abigailthelibrarian Sep 10, 2013 2:05 PM (in response to Steve Werner)Rome was an Adobe program released a few years ago- it does a lot of the things you can do with InDesign (I think) but it's free now since they're not updating it anymore. I was kind of hoping maybe the InDesign fonts are stored on the Adobe server too instead of being local so maybe someone else had an issue at some point getting on the server...

3. Re: Help connecting Rome with Adobe server
Dov Isaacs Sep 10, 2013 2:21 PM (in response to abigailthelibrarian)There was never a program released by Adobe by the name of Rome! (I've been with Adobe over 23 years!) And the only programs ever released by Adobe that do any of the things that InDesign do are PageMaker (effectively discontinued) and FrameMaker (still under development and actively marketed). Neither of these products are “free.”
I don't even recall a product with an internal code name of Rome. In fact, I don't recall any product from any software developer by that name.
Perhaps with some information you can help those on the forum figure out exactly what software from what vendor you are actually referring to!

Ellis home Sep 10, 2013 2:23 PM (in response to Dov Isaacs)Out of curiosity I did a quick search and found this: http://blogs.adobe.com/rome/project-rome-retirement/. Interesting to say the least.

5. Re: Help connecting Rome with Adobe server
Dov Isaacs Sep 10, 2013 2:30 PM (in response to Dov Isaacs)As a followup, there was something called “Project ROME” that was never really a commercial product. It was a web application based upon Adobe's AIR runtime system. Further information about it may be found at <http://download.macromedia.com/pub/rome/projectrome_sysreq_faq.pdf> and in fact, you can download the last version of this prerelease product for “free” use as-is - Windows version <http://download.macromedia.com/pub/rome/projectrome_win.air> and Mac version <http://download.macromedia.com/pub/rome/projectrome_mac.air>.
If you still have documents in this format, I would strongly suggest you save them out to something else before all support disappears.
In terms of standard fonts, normally such AIR-based software used variants of Myriad Pro and Minion Pro, fonts that are typically supplied with InDesign, Acrobat, Illustrator, etc.

7. Re: Help connecting Rome with Adobe server
[Ariel] Sep 10, 2013 2:36 PM (in response to abigailthelibrarian)What a question! (Must be spam, no?)
"Rome was an Adobe program" -- no it wasn't.
"but it's free now since they're not updating it anymore" -- non
sequitur: plenty of programs are not being updated but aren't free either.
"I was kind of hoping maybe the InDesign fonts" -- another non-sequitur:
what InDesign fonts? Who mentioned fonts? What ARE InDesign fonts anyway?
"stored on the Adobe server" -- the Adobe server?! What server?
Oh well, I give up. Is the answer 42?

11. Re: Help connecting Rome with Adobe server
abigailthelibrarian Sep 10, 2013 2:56 PM (in response to Dov Isaacs)Maybe I've totally misunderstood the description on the Adobe blog - thank you Ellis for providing the link- ("Project ROME is an all-in-one content creation and publishing application that lets virtually anyone at work or home inject the power of graphics, photos, text, video, audio and animation into everyday projects. From printed materials and presentations to digital documents and websites, you can go from start to finish within the simple, creative Project ROME environment") but I thought I could use this software to create event fliers and so forth. When you click on some of the fonts listed in the menu I get an error saying "Adobe cannot connect to the server" so when I did a search in the community forums something came up explaining that the fonts are stored on an Adobe server. This is all new to me so if anyone has any further information, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

12. Re: Help connecting Rome with Adobe server
Ellis home Sep 10, 2013 4:07 PM (in response to abigailthelibrarian)I think Dov Isaacs has said all there is to say about this Project ROME. I would follow his advice. We really don't know much about this product. Most of us didn't even know it existed.

abigailthelibrarian Sep 10, 2013 4:22 PM (in response to Ellis home)KInd of bizarro that none of you veterans were familiar with it. I first read about on www.designshack.net and I thought it was a famous product. Oh well. Maybe I'll be able to prevail upon our administration to shell out the money for InDesign. Thanks for your help!

15. Re: Help connecting Rome with Adobe server
BobLevine Sep 10, 2013 5:16 PM (in response to abigailthelibrarian)I remember it but never really used it and never saw the point of it.
Apparently, neither did Adobe.

16. Re: Help connecting Rome with Adobe server
Steve Werner Sep 10, 2013 6:26 PM (in response to BobLevine)I remembered vaguely reading about Project Rome but never was interested in downloading it. I recall it was all built around using Flash and an AIR application, but those technologies are on the decline. I guess Adobe must have gotten not traction on the project.

Petteri_Paananen Sep 10, 2013 10:56 PM (in response to Steve Werner)I remember that I was playing with Project ROME while I was flying from Helsinki to Los Angeles to participate Adobe MAX 2010... I had good 10 hours spare time to try it. The consept was very promising but execution was very confusing and hard to adapt - at least as an InDesign user.
I have a feeling that Adobe Muse kind of took Project ROME´s place on the map...
By the way Steve, I think Muse and some other new Adobe softwarers are some kind of AIR applications, at least Adobe AIR is mentioned on their system requirements...

18. Re: Help connecting Rome with Adobe server
Steve Werner Sep 11, 2013 5:24 AM (in response to Petteri_Paananen)Yes, Adobe does still use AIR apps. I believe the Adobe Content Viewer for DPS uses it. Every so often when I use the Content Viewer, I'm prompted to get an AIR update so I guess it still has its uses.

BobLevine Sep 11, 2013 6:46 AM (in response to Steve Werner)Only the desktop viewer and the viewer for Android.
And the Android viewer is getting a re-write as a native app. Long,
long, overdue.
