E-Commerce API: how to retrieve product tags?

Does anyone know how to get the tags for a product using the e-commerce API? By product tags I mean the tags that can be added to a product so they can be listed by tag. I know I can get product attributes, but my client has been using tags (before attributes were available), and now I need to be able to retrieve them through the API.

I've not used it but it seems (at least looking at the sample output) that the tags come down as a string.

I have never noticed that before is it new(ish)?

The tags that come down through the API are actually the keywords (the field just before Custom 1). I assumed it was the tags, but when I tried it yesterday I found out that was not the case. Meh. Tags have existed for a long time, it's annoying that they are not available through the API.

Yeah I didn't think you could get them, I guess "tags" are incorrect in the API and should be labeled keywords.

Yes, I think the wording is not the best. Although to use the keywords on a page you have to use {tag_tags} which is confusing too!
