Specifics depend on platform and OS version, but this can help.

Right click on the icon of a known PDF and go to Porperties/Get Info. If the Open With sections doesn't show Reader, change it. Make sure that the change affects all files of the same type.

Nothing unusual about wanting to save in DOCX format, that's the default for Word (but you can change it to DOC, if someone in Word 2003 or earlier needs to read it).

Try going to the Programs control panel

- select Adobe Reader

- click Change

- DO NOT select uninstall

- Click Repair

You need to change the file association for .pdf files to open with Adobe Reader; see http://windows.microsoft.com/is-is/windows7/change-the-program-that-opens-a-type-of-file

Well, let's take a different approach as fixing double clicking seems to be getting nowhere fast.

Can you start Adobe Reader from the Start button?

Can you use File > Open (in Adobe Reader) to open the PDF files you need?

Adobe reader could not open 'ssmple literature review. Docx because it is

either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for

example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).

Well, actually, everything has been working fine because a DOCX file isn't a PDF. It's a Word document. What has led you to assume it's a PDF?

I don't know why Adobe Reader tries to open them. We weren't making much headway there, so I'm trying to make sure you can at least open your PDF files.

The PDF symbol is basically the same thing as the program used to open the file: it's one problem not two.

Let's look at your point "Also, other pdfs that I know are pdfs wont open.". Can you give the error message from something that really is a PDF file?

I can't make anything of that description. We may need a screen shot. Do you know how to make one?

I'm afraid not. Did you try to attach it to an email? That doesn't work. You need to save it as a JPEG, then come to the forum (view full discussion link). As you type your reply, click the Camera icon.

From all your posts I gather that

  1. .docx file type is associated with Adobe Reader
  2. .pdf file type is associated with Microsoft Word

You must change these file associations to open with the correct program (.docx → Word; .pdf → Reader).  Use the instructions in the link I posted earlier.

The ONLY WAY to add a screen shot is to follow the instructions I sent before. Word is not involved. Email is not involved.

The instructions were: You need to save it as a JPEG, then come to the forum (view full discussion link). As you type your reply, click the Camera icon.

Let us know if there is a difficulty following these instructions.
