    Print indd page

    Jack Level 1

The default printing dialog makes a hash of my pdf page at 12x16. There is no predictable control over size or positioning of the resulting image.

Screen print of pdf gives a small image of low resolution.

Is there a way to print the pdf or indd version of the page, directly, using my default Mac print dialog?

Confusing. If you print a PDF, then from within Adobe Reader or Acrobat or any other PDF viewer. Where's the connection to Indesign?

However: If you set up a document in Indesign of 12 x 16 format and export it to PDF and in the export dialog you also set page format 12 x 16 and then print it to 12 x 16 paper, then it should be 1:1.

If you print to bigger sheets, then yes, there is only limited control where to place the PDF content on the sheet. There are extra tools for that.

Adobe Reader print utility does not result in a faithful reproduction of the image on the page at 13x19. First attempt resulted in only the lower 3" of the image, and in greately reduced scale. Second attempt gave only the lower quadrant of the image at 8x10. Viewer print dialog seems to be missing some controls, or I am not setting them correctly.

In future I'll simply create the image in Photoshop first (it was my original, bad decsion not to do this in the first place), and import that into inDesign. I can then print the image at will, using Photoshop.

Later when I have more time I'll try to resolve the Adobe Review issue with Adobe. You are right, it is not an inDesign issue at all. I was hoping that I could print FROM WITHIN inDesign, but from what I have read, not sure that is possible. Or is there a way to do that?

Of course you can print directly from InDesign. People do it all the time. That is what the InDesign Print Dialog box is for.

The InDesign Print Dialog has more features directly relating to InDesign that the typical Mac OS print dialog, Photoshop and illustrator also have their own dialog boxes. They are a sort of print dialog on steriods. They supersede the Mac OS print dialog.

I'm not totally clear about your problems, but somethings to check in the InDesign Dialog box: (File menu - Print)

              • in the Setup tab, make sure your Paper Size is set to 13x19 and make sure the Page Position is Centered.
              • in the Graphics tab, make sure Images - Sent Data is set to ALL. Do NOT use Optimized Subsampling this only sends part of the image data and will print poorly.

You should check all the settings not just the ones I mentioned.

If you need to access some printer specific features (but this usually isn't necessary), Click the PRINTER . . . button at  the bottom of the InDesign Print Dialog.

It will come up with a warning about avoiding printing conflicts, just click OK and then you will see the typical Mac OS print dialog for your printer. Make any changes, if necessary, and click PRINT, you will then be returned to the InDesign Print dialog and then click PRINT again (on the lower right)

Now I see the problem: there is no print option under the File menu of my inDesign v. 5.5.

Maybe I need an update? Thought I was signed up for automatic updates.

                Or reinstall?

Either you are using a workspace that doen't include the print option (do you see an option to Show All Menu Items?), the workspace is corrupt (try a new workspace and/or reset this one), or your prefs have gone south (see Replace Your Preferences).

Cmd-P does nothing. That wa the first thing I tried before opening this thread. Wrking through Peter's article now...

Resetting (i.e., deleting, with C-O-C-S pressed at app. startup) preferences succeeded restoring the Print option along with, I believe, many other options in the File menu).

Printing with Cmd-P starts the printer, but my 13"x17" page content (12"x16" table with 6 rows of images alternating 4 cells and 3 cells, down the page) is truncated at 8-3/8" x 10-7/8", or if you like, the table is truncated at 7-7/8" x 10-3/8".

Print presets follow, in case that helps:

                          Try this:

In Setup - Page Position: Center

In Advanced - Print as Bitmap: Off

                          -Bill

Edit: and in Graphics - Send Data: All (not Optimized Subsampling)

This sort of printing failure can sometimes be corrected by setting the page size to "Defined by Driver" then using the Setup button to enter the driver and set the page size there, but you may find it works better to export the page to PDF and print from Acrobat.

try this...with file saved and closed..go to devices and printers..right click on your printer > printing preferences>paper size>custom or user defined..type in your paper size to add it..close that out then open your file, and go to print>set up > select your user/custom size and depending on your printer..put in your document size if it has it..in the same dialog box should have options select position page in center..make sure fit to page is unclicked and it should print like a champ! I find this works better than using the print presets sometimes.
