Location for PSE12 in Win7
Note the exact name of the PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe file.

3. Re: PSE 12 - Open With ...
Alan Russell Sep 26, 2013 9:43 AM (in response to 99jon)I'm sorry, 99jon, but I have already tried that. The system would not take PSE 12, but continued to open with Windows Photo Viewer.

4. Re: PSE 12 - Open With ...
Alan Russell Sep 26, 2013 9:46 AM (in response to MichelBParis)No, sorry, MichelBParis, that doesn't work either. I don't understand, PSE 11 added itself to the list of eligible programs, why couldn't PSE 12 do the same?

5. Re: PSE 12 - Open With ...
99jon Sep 26, 2013 9:47 AM (in response to Alan Russell)You did choose the exe file?
If so, I'm not sure why it would not work.
You may have to launch Expert Mode and use:
File >> Open

6. Re: PSE 12 - Open With ...
Alan Russell Sep 26, 2013 9:53 AM (in response to 99jon)Yes, I selected the .exe file. I know I can use the Open dialog, but it would be so much more convenient to use the "Open with" facility. Also the jump lists on the task bar and the start menu are not being updated with the opened files.

7. Re: PSE 12 - Open With ...
ssprengel Sep 26, 2013 11:42 AM (in response to Alan Russell)If PSE11 is still shown on the Open-With list, perhaps you can search the registry and change the occurrences of PSE11 to PSE12 in the path names for the Editor executable when it looks appropriate. It is possible that PSE12 tried to add itself to the lists and some other Windows issue is preventing that from occurring, perhaps with permissions or similar. If you still have PSE11 installed you might compare the Effective Permissions of the EXE for PSE11 and PSE12 and see if something is different.
If someone else has PSE12 installed on Windows and can confirm that their PSE12 is able to be used with Open With that might be helpful.

After the installation of PSE12, Open With opens with the PSE12 editor.
No problem with Win7 64 bits.

Little_Pale_Face Sep 26, 2013 12:07 PM (in response to ssprengel)Hi,
I am using PSE 12 trial version and have managed to get the "Open With" to work.
Try this.
Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the folder specified above by the others.
Right click on the file PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe and then select copy
Right click somewhere else in the folder and select copy - this creates a copy of the exe file.
Rename the copy to, say PSE 12.exe
Now use the instructions given above but browse to the new file ans select that
You should now see Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 in the Open With list.
You could do a regedit but there is dangers there.
Good luck

Alan Russell Sep 26, 2013 12:20 PM (in response to Little_Pale_Face)Thanks, LittlePaleFace, that did the trick. I am now thinking of deleting the original program and renaming the copy to the original name.

11. Re: PSE 12 - Open With ...
Little_Pale_Face Sep 26, 2013 12:30 PM (in response to Alan Russell)HI,
That would not be a good idea.
I think the problem is that Windows gets a little confused over the names, probably because of the length of the name.
To make sure everything keeps working, I suggest you retain both files.

12. Re: PSE 12 - Open With ...
Alan Russell Sep 26, 2013 12:41 PM (in response to Little_Pale_Face)You are correct again. Windows does not like long names. I've ended up with a name of PSE12Editor which seems to work perfectly. Even the jump lists are now working.
Thanks to everone who helped in this problem.

Little_Pale_Face Sep 26, 2013 1:35 PM (in response to Pixxpower)Hi,
Yes, that is a way to change the registry but there is no way that I will recommend someone to run regedit unless I know that they fully understand the dangers.
Get it wrong and you can quickly kill your system.

15. Re: PSE 12 - Open With ...
Alan Russell Sep 26, 2013 2:03 PM (in response to Little_Pale_Face)I did do the registry update, and also deleted the entry for PSE12Editor. All is well. Perhaps I was wrong, maybe Windows didn't have a problem with the length of the module name. I uninstalled PSE 11 before installing PSE 12, but obviously the registry cleanup was not complete. The problem lies with Adobe.
