I expect this indicates an XML tag. With IDCS4 under Windows, selecting such text and right-clicking offers the choice to "Untag Text," and if you really want to zap the XML structure you can select all text in the story and un-tag it all in one swell foop. If you want to see the structure it is available under View. I find the extra stuff in the file distracting, but some jobs require it.
Nice idea, but I'm afraid not. No option to Untag. If I select Tag it has no visible effect, but I then get the 'Untag' option, which suggests it wasn't tagged before. Either way those characters remain.
I wonder if the original text was extracted from a web page in some way, though?
Might be a Text Anchor (hyperlink destination).
It likely is a Text Anchor by the image you provide. Have a look at my resource sheet:
But your GREP code indicates that it is an Index Marker. Have a look at the Index panel. Is it filled with many things?
Also consult my other handout for a lookup on what GREP and Metacharacter you are dealing with:
Hope this helps,

Yes Michael - I think it must be an index marker! Just looked at the panel and it has indeed been used. I've always indexed in weird ways using Filemaker so never explored this window!
In the original file, the colon character has a big chevron under it, and that appears when I add a page reference.
Thanks! Now I'm off to work out how to get rid of them...
! Ooo just clicked on your link ... you're one of the authors of my (as yet little-used) grep bible sheets! I'm honoured.
