I purchased a Nikon D600 in June 2013. I went on a trip and downloaded the trial photoshop CC on my laptop while I was there. When the trial was over I tried to pull up the NEF files from my desktop with CS5. I recieved the error message that Camera Raw did not recognize the files. I tried updating the plug in for Camera Raw 7.3. But still recieved the message. I even tried opening the files directly from the converter and they just don't regonize the NEF files. So I have a "friend" who downloads programs. He downloaded the latest verison of CS6 and Lightroom 4 on my computer. Unfortunely my computer still will not regonize the files.
I have a Mac OS X
DNG Coverter 8.2
Camera Raw 7.3 will not run with Photoshop CS5. The last version of Camera Raw that you can use is 6.7. The DNG converter is a good choice. But it's possible that you have made a common mistake when first trying to use it. Notice that the prompt is asking for the FOLDER that contains your NEF files. If you try to open that folder in the DNG converter it will tell you there are no supported files. Just select the folder and then choose the option to convert the files. If you only want to convert one or two files, you can drag those files onto the icon for the DNG converter.
