Try trashing preferences. This causes InDesign to regenerate two preferences files: InDesign Defaults and InDesign SavedData. Restart. For a step-by-step, consult page 14 of this guide: InDesign CS6: a complete tour of preferences:
And empty the inDesign Recovery folder.
Hello. Thank you very much for replying. I just tried to do as you said and also empty the inDesign Recovery Folder - but I don't seem to have the folders that should be where everyone says they are? Is this why it's not working?
The instructions say go to:
Hard Drive/Users/<USER>/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign
But I don't have a LIBRARY folder where it should be? And I can't find Adobe InDesign in a Cache folder.

Press and hold "Alt" key
and then choose Finder menu -> Go -> Library
