kglad: this worked before today. I had been running it without any errors for a long time. Why would it start wigging out now?
normally a warning pops-up about a security violation when the flash file opened in a browser tries to access a local file. but if you close that pop-up without setting-up access i think you won't see the pop-up again for that file.
to test if that's your issue, rename your fla and publish a test html/swf with the new name. open that html file in your browser and see if a pop-up warning appears.

The more and more I learn of AS3, the worse AS2 looks. Plus, I'll hopefully use remoting on my next project rather than something like this.
