An annoying, disruptive bug in Photoshop CC

    Adbeannoys Community Member

Photoshop CC (including the latest update 14.1.2; Mac version, not sure about Windows) has a bug that causes a destructive reset of workspaces if Filter>>Render>>Lighting Effects... is selected. Once selected your workspace will be replaced with Lighting Effect Properties and 3D panels and all other workspaces get disabled. The only way out of it is to quit and restart Photoshop and rebuild the workspaces from scratch.

Adbeannoys, I can't reproduce anything like what you're reporting.

It's important to realize that while in Lighting Effects "mode" - i.e., while you're running the Lighting Effects function - the Photoshop UI is changed, ON PURPOSE.  This is a NEW FEATURE of recent versions of Photoshop (first appearing in Photoshop CS6 as I recall):  All your normally displayed panels are typically hidden and Photoshop transitions into a sort of "in place" plug-in that displays the results of Lighting Effects on your image, and which has its own workspace layout.

Once you complete (or cancel) Lighting Effects, Photoshop should return to your selected workspace.

I suspect that, assuming from your comments that it's not properly returning to your selected workspace, somehow Lighting Effects is actually crashing/failing on your system and leaving the temporary change in place.

Since you're using a Mac the standard advice to try to find an updated display/GPU driver is not going to be helpful, but you may be able to avert the issue by going into Photoshop - Preferences - Performance, clicking the [Advanced Settings...] button, and choosing a lower Drawing Mode setting.  Make sure to fully Quit and restart Photoshop after making this change.

            Good luck.

I assume all the regulars here know that Photoshop CC has bugs, so the information you provided in the title is pretty close to meaningless.

In future could you to be a bit more specific and go easy on the adjectives in the titles of threads you start?
