Titles transparent and bright using a color gradient yet keeping original background?

      Hi guys,

I've been asked to replicate the opening titles to this sequence:

I've tried placing white text against a black background then using the Luma key to reveal the background through the text but that still leaves me with the problem of needing to decrease the opacity of the title's black background to blend it into the original clip.

Then there's the question of where to apply the 4-way color gradient. I initially applied it to the background clip but that means that the whole thing has the color gradient in it instead of just the footage we see through the text.

I've tried moving the order of the titles/clips to place them above/below each other in the video tracks but I can't figure it out and it's really frustrating me.

Is this something I can do in Premiere Pro CS6 or do I need Photoshop or After Effects?

I would really appreciate some help here, i've already spent 4 hours trying to figure it out....

      Thanks in advance!!!
