    gradient animation

Hi, I am using AE CC and very new to the program.

What are the first steps I should take in order to create an animation like this? http://www.airsepcpd.com/Resources/airsep_vpsa.aspx

I have layers in Photoshop of each of the three steps and then I have a layer(rectangle) of the gradient. Should I have a separate gradient layer?

In AE do I need to make a mask that is the outline of the diagram? I'm not sure how it works. Just need some guidance. I looked at some tutorials too, but if you know of anything better I should be checking out, please let me know.

      Thank you.

You would only use masks as paths for Stroke effects to simulate the liquid/ gas in the pipes. For the gradient one would simpyl use a linear wipe on whatever shape - doesn't matter if you create it in PS or use AE's tools. In any case, you may wish to search the web again based on those quick tips. This is really basic stuff and plenty of tutorials around.
