      Bill,

Don't include "Instant On" hot water either. I find myself drinking too much tea just because I don't have to wait for a tea kettle or even a microwave. Just pull the special handle and water hot enough to brew tea comes out.

          Steven,

We have had an Insta-hot faucet for years, and I love it. The "tea kettle" got packed away, long ago, and I do not even know where it is.

Since the new refrigerator and freezer do not have cold, filtered water on the doors (ice maker is also inside the freezer, and not though the door), we will probably upgrade the Insta-hot to the one with chilled water too.

Now, I am adding a "clear ice" maker to the outdoor kitchen, so we will have ice from two sources - one regular, but one clear.

Gonna' be some changes, that we will just have to get used to is suppose.

Still trying to decide about a trash compactor though - the jury is split, right down the middle - totally polarized.

Have the trash compactor. Can't justify a second ice machine.

I would not have put in the compactor but since it was already in the house I use it. We have been in the house a little over two weeks and I will empty the trash today or tomorrow for only the second time. So I guess I am in favor. But we set up reycling and green waste containers since our city trash collection has three cans. Waste, recycling and green waste. That really cuts back on the trash. And the trash can is half the size of the others, so a compactor really helps.

We have an extra freezer in the garage so I suppose I should get some large plastic bags or tupperware and start storing ice for larger parties. We have a couple of rolling insulated carts to hold chilled drinks and we will want to fill them with ice for parties. Our ice comes through the door of the fridge with the cold water. Which reminds me, I need to replace the filter since I don't know how old this one is.

              Steven,

Thank you for the thoughts. I will keep researching the compactor, and we can add that, right up to the point that we order the cabinetry.

For the ice, the regular ice-maker comes with the freezer, but without the dispenser that our Kitchen-Aid has (along with chilled, filtered water), but we do enough entertaining, that a clear-ice machine would be very useful. We have space in the outdoor kitchen (covered by a about 20' of roof, so no sun on it. It's also going to be on the North side of the house. That unit has output, that with but a little planning, should accommodate all but the largest party. For those, then the caterer will be responsible for tons of ice.

Because we will be without that in-door ice and chilled water dispenser, I will add a new Insta-hot (ours is very old, to begin with), with both heated, and chilled water. Also, the new one will have the filter located in a better place, as the current one (added after construction) is tough to change, and that is not a good thing. Before we added that old Insta-hot unit, about the only use that we had for the microwave was heating water quickly. With it, about the only use for the mic was to cook corn, or rice (if we were too lazy to hook up the rice cooker). The new unit will be a "speed oven," with both mic and convection, right next to a steam and convection oven. I have a feeling that we will use that steam oven most often.

              Appreciated,

No "Insta-Hot" here, but we do have circulating hot water run by a small pump and with a reservoir at the Rinnai on demand hot water heater so the Rinnai doesn't run all the time... each faucet in the house is supplied by a T off the main line, so we have 125 degree water within "about" 3 feet of line from the feed line to the faucet

Makes it really nice for the shower... turn the valve and in about 2 seconds hot water is coming out the spray heads

                    Jim,

                    Works fine for me.

You know, we keep having housing related conversations. I think I will start a thread for "Living, Working and Storage Areas"

What do you think? That ought to cover about any conversation related to new houses or studios.

If you're going to include working areas, someone (can't remember who) already posted about buying a garage for video (green screen?) work

I can't even get one car in the garage yet, let alone a lighting setup!

                            Steven,

I completely understand. Right now, our third bay is filling up with appliances. Every time that we find some needed Miele thingy on sale, we buy it, and stick it into that bay. The housesitter can no longer park there, if we fly, leaving our cars in the garage.

Packing it in for a few weeks, and heading to London today. We're back for a night, then fly to San Francisco for 4 days, so it'll be into Nov, before I get back to any "work" on the Adobe forums.

I thought this thing was a two car garage, because it was obviously larger than the one car garage that is common around here. But when I measuerd it for the flooring I realized that we were only going to ever get one car into it. And that leaves me plenty of room to leave my light stands set up and off to one side. So I can live with it the way it is.

We spent some time in there today. I broke down the huge ADK box that I have to use if I ever send back my PC for repair, or upgrade. The inside box with the foam would fit in the attic, but the opening is too narrow for the outer box. No problem, I can always put it back together if I need it.

Some of the Christmas stuff made it upstair as well.

The drop down over the garage only gets me to part of the attic. There is a small square opening in a different part of the house that I will have to send somebody up into to get my cable run to behind the PC. Right now it only goes to a wall plug high up on the wall to where the last owner had a TV mounted.  Either that, or I get a wireless card for the big PC and put the cable modem behind the TV in the family room.  That would make some sense, I suppose.

At the moment, I have the cable modem up on a high shelf and I have an ugly cable running over to behind my new IKEA desks.

The last house we owned got built-in desks and cabinets and the office looked like a warm inviting place. I even had a Murphy bed in the office in case we had more visitors than our guest room could handle. I spent $13K getting it just the way we wanted it.

This time? Less than $500 at IKEA and it is minimalistic. Just desks. The desks were cheap as dirt. The legs? $15 each. We had to have adjustable legs to accommodate a droptop desk for my wife right next to her computer desk. We spent more on the legs than on the desks. Plus, the adjustable legs help with the fact that it is an old house and apparently the foors are not perfectly level.

In any case, drop in to the forums and say hello now and then so we can live vicariously through your travels. And if you might have a few minutes to have a drink in the hotel bar, let me know and I will drive across the bridge for a visit. If you have more time, you can come by the house. and relax for a bit.

Well, phase one of the trips is over. Everything had been nicely scheduled, then UAL decided to move our flight from SFO back to PHX back by about 4 hours - nice to have a 10 hour flight from LHR, then a 7 hour layover at SFO - NOT! Then, the flight (already moved to late at night) was delayed by another couple of hours, so we made it back at 1:30AM. Because of a committment in Phoenix, we are only here for two nights, then back to SFO. Back for two nights and on to Chicago. Back for two nights, then back to SFO. Oh well, at least we do not have to fly through LAX until Sunday, and not trying to do that today - Friday. Things could well be worse. Glad that we did not overnight at SFO, then try to get back today, through LAX, as we had actually considered doing... guess that what turned out to be a 9 hour layover, and very late night flight was not so bad, after all.

As for shopping, well, we are not in one place long enough to do much of that - besides, just as we arrived in London, they got a major storm - bummer.

No time for more appliance work, but did see that I now have a layout for the laundry room upgrade, so things ARE happening. Luckily, only cabinets there, as our LG washer and drier are still going strong.

Only recent change to kitchen is the addition of the Miele Coffeemaker: http://preview.tinyurl.com/3wxqdun

We found a couple of display models, at great prices, but all were the Nespresso units, and not what we wanted. Guess that it's full-price, or nothing? At least we did find the warming drawer and utility drawer, at a great price, so all is not lost.

Now, if we can only locate the 36" 'fridge and freezer units.

                                    More later,
