I am looking at using a Pegasus J4 Thunderbolt Drive setup for editing in Premeire until I can purchase a more robust solution (probably Pegasus2). I am trying to determine what the ideal setup would be for getting the most performance out of the drive enclosure. I apologize for my ignorance, but from Premiere's standpoint, would I be better using 4 small SSD's (120-240gb each), configure as JBOD? or should I use 7200 rpm drives, configured as RAID 0? Connecting via Thunderbolt.
Thanks in advance.
If you read it carefully, you will notice that 2 SSD's max out the Thunderbolt connection, so adding more SSD's does not improve performance at all, only cost more.
Four conventional 7200 rpm disks in raid0 will also (almost) max out the Thunderbolt bus, but are a lot less expensive and offer far more space. JBOD is not advisable, due to lagging performance.
4 x 1 TB HDD @ $ 70 = $ 280, less than 2 x 256GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD @ $ 220 = $ 440
So, with up to 4 drives over 1 Thunderbolt connection, would I get as much performance out of 4 7200 rpm drives, in a RAID 0 array as I would with 2 SSD's JBOD?
