Can I apply a default transition to a stretch of film, rather than between each clip, on at a time?

Yes. Well, depending on which version of the program you're using you can.

In  version 12, select all of the clips for that segment on your timeline, right-click and select Apply Default Transition.

You can also change any transition to your Default Transition by right-clicking on it in the Transitions panel and selecting the option.

I agree with SG if you are talking about applying the the same default transition between a group of selected Timeline clips all at one time rather than one at a time.

However, because of the way you worded your question, I was wondering if you had a different use intended for "transitions".

Some have used certain transitions as "effects" by stretching them across the whole clip rather than aligning the transition in the usual way of Right Clip, Between Clips, Left Clip.
