I am in the process of building a etmplate, but when I validate a page created using the template via the W3V Validation Markup Service, I receieve the following error:

It's telling you that you're missing the type attribute for the <script> tag.
If you were using an HTML5 doc type instead of XHTML, you would not need the type attributes on <script> tags.
For what it's worth, HTML5 is simpler code and better semantically than X/HTML. Also, it's necessary to support HTML5 <audio> and <video> -- in case you're heading in that direction.
