Multi Level Catalog display options?? Strategy? 2k products

      Hi folks,
I'm working on a site that has 4 levels of products and many at that level.   I'm trying to figure out how best to display this catalog.  I placed on the catalog page a list dump of the top level products, which seems logical, but then if I want to display the sub categories, there is no way to do so on the products list page because it is a dynamic template and is the same for every page.  I think the number of categories (about 50) would be too cumbersome for a tabbed menu.   The list dump links take you to the top level catalog template and not to a page you could make unique for each category...   Subdivision is an absolute necessity because there are over 2000 products in their inventory.

Wow,  I was trying to come up with a sub menu listing, but I'm running into real trouble:

I am selecting to display specific lists of catalogs on the page from the catalog dump list menu. Screenshot 2013-11-08 15.07.50.pngHOWEVER, I notice that when I select a top level catalog, only the sub catalogs show and the top level one does not. For example I chose the door catalog, which shows the sub catalog cellar door on the page, but not the top level door catalog.  This is a real problem because if I  dump the list of the top level catalogs, the sub catalogs do not display . The catalog is too large for submenus on the top level.

Here are the pages by example:

http://dealerssupplyco.businesscatalyst.com/catalog    //displays all top level categories  but the dynamic pages to which they link do not allow sub catalogs!! because they are governed by the Online Shop Module Templates.

http://dealerssupplyco.businesscatalyst.com/catalog_categories.html  // this page I'm developing to allow links to sub-catalogs, but when I choose that link (doors for example) only the sub catalogs are displayed. I need that top level category to display there as well. When selecting the top level item door for a catalog list dump, it should be included!

Inserting the specific catalog as a secondary option is not very elegant.
