I was under the impression he could open up the this Indesign CS 6 Markup DSL file with his version of CS5 Indesign. Instead he got a message there were missing images? What is up with that.? I make a link page in document so I could change the color of the background if I wanted to for this link on the page menu.

Do you mean you you saved as IDML? Unless you embed the linked image, you have to include the image with the IDML file with the same relative path.

Actually not quite true. As long as the links are in the same folder or a subfolder of the one containing the .idml file ID will find them.
ID actually uses absolute, not relative paths, and searches the current folder and subfolders if it cannot locate the absolute path location.
