Can you modify an existing state?

Once a state has been created (with either ActionScript or mx:states), can it by modified? I have an application with eight images; when you click on one image, seven images fade, and the one you clicked on moves to a specific position. I can accomplish this with eight states, but it sure would be nice to use one state (in addition to the base state) which is modified right before I transition to the new state.

Another possiblity: can I use variable target name in the state definition? Seems like I'd need curly braces inside curly braces!

Or, is everything about a state "carved in stone" once it is created?

      Thanks,
      Steve
