    Print option NONE placeholders

    JFG5 Level 1

For some reason, my HP 5000 (the best old printer EVER) prints solid gray placeholder boxes when I select NONE under print options when I output proof pages and don't need to see graphics. The literature says it's supposed to print a bounding box with an x in it. Since this is tabloid, I'm wasting a lot of very expensive cartridge ink on my proofs. Is there any way I can change this? Is there a teeny, tiny button or drop down I'm missing? Postscript is Level II and ASCII (no changes allowed).

A newer HP AIO (non postscript) drops all graphics in an 8.5 version ...

      Mac 10.9

      CS3,4,5,6, & CC

      Any help appreciated.
