Text code interpreted as scientific notation

I have an http service returning xml to populate a data grid. The grid columns are tied to element attributes. One of these columns is a simple text code, like a product code. When this product code "looks like" scientific notation (e.g. "3E5"), the grid is displaying "300000" instead of the code. Is there a way somehow to tell the grid that this is a text field, and not a number? How do you turn this off? I am rendering the column with a label, but it doesn't make any difference. Thanks for any tips.
