Well no ideas until you let us know when it's crashing and what you are doing at the moment of the crash?
There's more than one way to trash preferences
If it's a specific file that's crashing
If it's crashing on output to PDF, IDML, RTF or other format

So more information. I saved one of the files as IDML and that seemed to open fine. But then opening another one of the IND files crashed the application. Also, once the files are open, they will crash after a random amount of time. She also mentioned this morning that if she clicks to recover when first opening InDesign, it usually crashes.
Sounds like problems in the files that .idml is able to repair, and the crash on opening is most likley corrupt recovery data, so empty the InDesign Recovery folder and don't attempt the recovery.
