    margieannejulie Community Member

      Hello,

I created template Keywords, checked keywords, saved, select All pictures, append metadata,

and NOTHING happens, I am showing "multiple values", thanks

When 'multiple values' shows in a metadata field it means the selected files have different values in this field.

For example: Date created is always showing 'multiple values' by default when multiple files are selected because it includes the creation date and time of 1 file in this field. Off course each file has a at least a different creation time. It is impossible for Bridge to show all this different data in the date created field at once, and it should not also because this would look like all files had all shown metadata applied while in fact some have part of it and others have an other part. Hence they choose to show multiple values indicating the same field of the selected files have different values added.

I also don't understand why you make a template for keywords. You should add those keywords to your keyword list including parent and sub keywords. (they show now in the keyword panel as italic, meaning they are not part of this list but only assigned to the files selected.)

When you select files you only have to click on the keywords to apply them to the file. A checkmark means all selected files have this keyword, a minus sign means that not all files have this keyword.

You should use the template for your copyright info because this is not showing in the metadata right now

            Dear Omke,

Thank you so much for your generous reply as usual, but I have to go step by step:  where is the keyword panel, and once I have located that, I am going

to have to ask you if I can append keywords simultaneuosly to all picts: these were ALL teken in the SAME country, SAME month, (of course the different date is taken care of) and they all relate to the SAME subject,

            thanks again

              Hi Margieannejulie

You already have the keywords panel in view according to your screenshot. You are using the default 'essential' Workspace which to my opinion is next to useless but you can easily create and save your own workspace by dragging the panels in size or move them to another location. The lines between columns and panels can be used to change the size and if you click and hold a tab you drag the panels. A horizontal blue lines means between two other panels and a surrounding blue line means adding as a tab to an existing panel.

Bottom right in your screenshot is the panel keywords.

Under other keywords are your present keywords in italic, meaning they are not persistent in your keyword list that by the looks of it is also the default one.

Top right of the keyword panel is a small menu icon. when you click on it it shows a few options. Amongst them New Keyword. If you name this keyword Syrian you can add sub keywords to this keyword.

Either by using again the menu icon or while with your cursor on the new keyword right click on it and from the menu choose new sub keyword. This adds a sub keyword to Syria that acts as the parent keyword.

Now you can choose to either create more sub keywords for Syria or add another sub keyword to nest in an existing keyword.

For example you have all images made in Syria which obvious would be the parent keyword because all files are made in this country.

Then you can divide the subjects to your own wishes. Let's say you have some opposition fighters with Kalashnikovs in Aleppo that would make a set up like this:

              Syria

                   Aleppo

                        Syrian opposition fighter

                             Kalshnikov

This is a keyword with 3 nested sub keywords. In Bridge preferences under Keywords you can set the option to automatically apply parent keywords which to my opinion can be quit useful because it means when you click on the last nested keyword it also auto selects the above keywords. In this case it would mean you select all images of fighters with Kalashnikovs in Aleppo in the bridge content window. Now you only have to click on the keyword called 'Kalashnikov' and automatically the other keywords Syrian opposition fighter, Aleppo and Syria are also selected and applied.

The pro's of having such a set up instead of all keywords in one template is that you can narrow your search better. If you create other sub keywords under Syria (for instance with children) and you do a search for Syria both the images with children and the fighters will appear as a result. But if you search for the keyword Kalashnikov only the ones with fighters showing guns will show in the result.

              I hope this makes sense

So take some time in creating a good keyword tree having good main keywords with many sub keywords. Then select the files you want them to apply to and click on the most nested keyword you want to add and the miracle happens.

You have to take care letting Bridge do all the caching once the activity bar bottom left starts running. Because if you click on another keyword while the previous process in still going on it will start the new job before finishing the old one. Resulting in not having all keywords applied which shows by a minus in the square instead of a checkmark (when all files have the same word applied).

It seems a lot of work but once you know the principal it is fairly easy. The little extra effort you make at this point will be paid back later on when you have a lot of files in your archive and need to find just the view files you want to have.

Also be sure to regularly export the keywords list for back up purposes.

Thanks, i am going to try, but i woul like  to clean first, could you please tell me how to delete keyword sets themselves, when, if I check, say, events, and check  subkeywords birthday and wedding, and menu icon/remove keywords, it removes the checks but not the set "events"

                thanks

Put your cursor on 'events' and with right mouse click menu select 'Delete'. This brings a menu asking to delete. hit OK and the Keyword Event including its sub keywords are deleted from the list.

You also can create a list in Texteditor yourself.

The first word you type is the parent keyword, hit return and tab for a sub keyword end repeat this for every sub keyword adding an extra tab like this:

                  Main keyword:

                       Sub keyword 1

                            Sub keyword 2

                                 Sub keyword 1

To see it better use the menu icon in keyword panel and choose export. This exports the list you are currently using. Save it to your desktop and open the file in text editor. Now you can see the structure of the list.

If you create one yourself in Texteditor you can use the keyword panel menu and choose clear and import. Select your newly created list and this will replace the existing list.
