I'm afraid that the somebody that can please help you might be someone to whom you job this out. InDesign's learning curve is awfully steep. But my gut feeling is that you should:
1) Turn on View -> Screen Mode -> Normal
2) Turn on View -> Extras -> Show Frame Edges
3) Go to Window -> Layers and make sure that all the layers are visible and unlocked
4) use the text tool (the T on the toolbar on the left) to try to select some text
and then tell us what works and what doesn't. Ifyou can take a screenshot and post it here with the camera icon, it might be easier to show us instead of tell us what you can and can't do.
Being new to InDesign you need a bit of a bootcamp
This book does it all
If it's a lot of changes - then I suggest you take the time to learn the software.
Weigh up what costs more - your time or hiring someone (preferably the designer) to make those changes.
