I am working on a windows 8 system. How do I fix this?

@Ellen – you did not say what version of InDesign you are using on what OS platform. That might be of help.
Also screenshots of the error messages would help:
You mentioned installed scripts. As long as they are not recide in a "startup scripts" folder, they should not affect launching InDesign. So look it up, if you installed those scripts in a "startup scripts" folder and simply put them out.
Leave all other scripts in place!
Then launch InDesign again. A system restart before could help …
Another useful test would be to create a new user on the computer, log in with that user, and try starting ID. Do the problems persist?
