1. Re: Hard Drive Raid - Is this a good idea?
Alex - DV411 Dec 9, 2013 12:39 PM (in response to Mr Eric J)I'd vote for RAID0 with daily differential or incremental backups. RAID10 is not an option with three spindles, RAID5 with three spindles is iffy and will probably be very slow.
That 1st image - is that some sort of Asus dashboard? Nice.

That is Speccy it is free and gives you a lot of great info. http://www.piriform.com/speccy/download , you can click on each item for more details.

JEShort01 Dec 9, 2013 1:49 PM (in response to Alex - DV411)I completely agree with Alex, but choose to put it more bluntly!
DO NOT go with a motherboard RAID 5 array; it would be soooo sloooowww.
A three drive RAID 0 array for all Premiere project files (media, projects, scratch, cache, outputs, etc.) works great.
In the event that you also use bridge and photoshop, put those cache files (thumbnails, etc.) onto your 840 Pro OS/boot drive.

Mr Eric J Dec 9, 2013 2:08 PM (in response to JEShort01)Since i am working with large files should i put the striping at the largest size?

5. Re: Hard Drive Raid - Is this a good idea?
ECBowen Dec 9, 2013 2:56 PM (in response to Mr Eric J)Just use the default block size for raid 0. No reason to change that.

Personally I find larger block sizes helpful - if not for performance reasons then because they disable an option to enable volume compression - something highly undesirable on a media volume.

7. Re: Hard Drive Raid - Is this a good idea?
JSS1138 Dec 9, 2013 9:36 PM (in response to Mr Eric J)With those drives, I'd recommend:
299 GB - System
238 GB - Projects
938 GB - Media
938 GB - Cahce/Scratch
938 GB - Exports
1.52 TB - Images (from Encore as Masters)
Leave the Page file alone and Windows managed.

8. Re: Hard Drive Raid - Is this a good idea?
JEShort01 Dec 10, 2013 7:46 AM (in response to JSS1138)Jim,
And why do you recommend that?
Note that you are making a recommendation in a hardware focused forum and doing so with over 32,000 posts and a quad-star MVP by your name, so why shouldn't you be believed!?
I have never challenged the countless times when you have posted on the Adobe forums that you, "do it this way" (put various items on separate drives), however I am challenging your post #7 here were you cite this as a recommendation.
My suggestion in post #3 was based on configuring various drives in over 20 different ways and running over 100 benchmarks over the past 3 years on 4 separate Premiere Pro systems ranging from a single quad-core up through a dual 8-core build. My suggestion of doing the RAID 0 was based on convenience and more importantly performance (speed). RAID 0 or more sophosticated hardware parity RAIDs are commonplace for most present day builds having 5 or more drives. What you are suggesting OTOH was commonplace 5+ years ago, but would not be considered common at all in 2013.

Jim

9. Re: Hard Drive Raid - Is this a good idea?
cc_merchant Dec 10, 2013 10:23 AM (in response to JSS1138)Makes no sense to me.
SSD should be the OS / Program / Page-file (static, not Windows managed) disk.
No dedicated Export drive. That is non-sense.
The 320 GB drive could be used for stock footage, exports and miscellaneous.
Two 1 TB disks in raid0 for Media cache / Previews.
One 1 TB disk (or better with an additional disk in raid0) for projects and media.
The large, slow disk for backups and images.
How long do you spend on editing a typical video project? Two days, two weeks, longer? How long does the encoding to the end result take? 30 minutes, 1 hour, several hours?
Are you willing to dedicate a single disk for a lousy write action that takes only 5 minutes at most when you write a 50 GB file? Seems crazy to me.

Mr Eric J Dec 10, 2013 11:33 AM (in response to cc_merchant)I think my partitions are messing some people up
So i have attatched them and here is a non scaled version (imgur png). -
11. Re: Hard Drive Raid - Is this a good idea?
Mr Eric J Dec 12, 2013 3:50 PM (in response to Mr Eric J)Thanks for the advice i was able to raid0 the 3 drives and it is faster than my SSD!

12. Re: Hard Drive Raid - Is this a good idea?
ECBowen Dec 13, 2013 9:39 AM (in response to Mr Eric J)However the SSD is far lower latency so the performance still is on the SSD drive.
