Trouble completing Flash Player installation on Internet Explorer

I get halfway through the Adobe Flash Player installation when it asks me to close Internet Explorer.  So I close Internet Explorer and click OK. But it keeps asking me to close Internet Explorer, even though it is already closed!  Never able to finish the installation because of this.  Frustrated... anyone know how to resolve this issue?

(Note: Flash Player was working fine on this laptop until about two weeks ago.  Then it just stopped working and any video we clicked on said we needed to install Flash Player.  Don't know why it went away?)
