3. Re: Lighting Effect Question
Chuck Uebele Dec 14, 2013 7:28 AM (in response to ColdForest)FRom your samples, this looks normal. The lighting effect does apply to the entire layer. You just have to adjust the values to your needs. If you want the color that you appled to be just applied to the spot and the spot to lighting the image, you might want to consider dropping down the ambient light then use a layer blend mode such as screen or lighten to blend the results.

4. Re: Lighting Effect Question
Chuck Uebele Dec 14, 2013 7:36 AM (in response to ColdForest)Exactly how would you like the lighting effect to look?

5. Re: Lighting Effect Question
ColdForest Dec 14, 2013 7:36 AM (in response to Chuck Uebele)Thanks for your comments.
I must be missing something since all of the tutorials/reading I've done on this suggest that the default filter settings will result in a more "narrow" (spotlight) effect (as opposed to what this looks like to me, which seems to be more like an "infinite light" effect - i.e., applied to the whole layer). I thought the default "spot effect" would focus the light more directly??

I'm after a "spotlight" effect (don't konw how to describe this more specifically, but hopefully you know what I mean ).

8. Re: Lighting Effect Question
Chuck Uebele Dec 14, 2013 7:49 AM (in response to ColdForest)I'm not sure if you want the yellow color over the entire image. If not, then set it in top control that says color. If you want the spot to be brighter, increase the intensity of that top control. The yellow color as you have it now mutes everything, especially since you have a negative value for the intensity. You can further control how bright the rest of the image looks by ambience. A value of 100% will give you the full tonal value of your origianl layer. Here's a little sample if putting a reg spot on an image. I don't know it that along the lines that you want.

9. Re: Lighting Effect Question
Chuck Uebele Dec 14, 2013 7:51 AM (in response to ColdForest)Just saw your last post. In that case, you need to drop down the ambience, and if you want the yellow cast over the entire image, boost up the intensity, as well as increase the intensity of the main light (top control).
-
10. Re: Lighting Effect Question
ColdForest Dec 14, 2013 8:17 AM (in response to Chuck Uebele)Something has got to be wrong with my setup - intensity and ambience don't seem to do anything (meaningful/relevant). I can remove the overall yellow cast by changing colorize to 'white' (along with the color of the top control - to white), but ambience just changes the whole image from dark to light and intensity doesn't do *anything*.
Weird?

11. Re: Lighting Effect Question
Chuck Uebele Dec 14, 2013 9:00 AM (in response to ColdForest)1 person found this helpfulColor control the actual color of the light source, and intensity controls how bright that light source is. The two work with each other in that the darker the color, the less intensity you can get.
Colorize color the entire image, and exposure controls how much of the colorized color affects the light source, so a lower value will lower the light source intensity and make the light more the color of the color selected in the colorized box.
Ambience is also tied to the colorize control. It will adjust the overall brightness on the image based on the color selected. With white, you can bring up the value to see the original image at 100%. With black there is no affect, as there is no "light" to brighten the image.

Your video card driver is over 2 years out of date...

17. Re: Lighting Effect Question
Chuck Uebele Dec 15, 2013 7:17 AM (in response to ColdForest)Great! I had an issue with lighting also with my AMD card, but in my case it was a switchable card that AMD would not update and left that to HP. They never updated the driver. I ended up getting a new comptuer and making sure I didn't have that type of setup!

18. Re: Lighting Effect Question
ColdForest Dec 15, 2013 7:20 AM (in response to Chuck Uebele)Ya, in this case it's interesting that the effect was present after a driver update; I'd be interested in knowing what exactly was fixed (newly available) in the driver that allowed Photoshop to correctly render the effect. I'm partly curious because it sure would have been nice if PS had the ability to detect this (i.e., driver update required/recommended). Moreover, I typically rely on Windows Update to identify these updates, but in this case this never happened...
Cheers.

19. Re: Lighting Effect Question
Chuck Uebele Dec 15, 2013 7:32 AM (in response to ColdForest)Windows updates don't detect driver updates. It would be nice to have some notice. I was getting a completely black screen, and when using 3D the shadows would never show, then it got so the lights wouldn't show.
