I think Flex is basically always asynchronous, so you may have to code around this.
you can probably simulate a synchronous call by putting it in a loop that breaks only when success or failure event is generated.
Having said that, i don't understand why a call being synchronous or asynchronous should affect tree population as long as you're getting the data back from the server.
are you listening for result event of the httpservice/webservice class? do you get data?
Are you saying that the call from .net to the salesforce source is asynchronous? In this case a loop in Flex that polls the .net back-end will work fine.
All calls from Flex are asynchronous. You cannot use a loop to make it appear synchronous.
