Avoiding the blank screen when I close a document

Often I'm working in Photoshop and something else at the same time, like InDesign. When I finish a document in Photoshop and close it, I'm left with a blank gray screen and I have to click again to get rid of that. Yes, I know there is a command to Hide Photoshop but that is less convenient for me.

When I'm working in any other Adobe program (like Illustrator) and I close the document, everything disappears but the menus and I can easily click on whatever else I want to work on. How can I get rid of this blank gray screen in Photoshop CS6?
