Why do you want to upgrade?
What are your media input and output formats?
Because your motherboard (for an i7-2600K) is limited to much older generation CPU's it is not advisable to upgrade the CPU.
Because the motherboard is a PCIe version 2 and has only 20 PCIe lanes available, adding a second GPU is not really a cost effective option.
I'm looking to improve render and playback speed working with 1080P MOV format. I will be working with 2.5K RAW CinemaDNG soon. Output formats are 1080P YouTube/Vimeo and DVD and Blu-Ray DVD.
Thank you for the info about the motherboard. I'll just take my desktop to the nearest computer store and have them upgrade both the CPU and motherboard. What is the next step up and bang-for-the-buck as far as CPU/motherboard combo?

Wow, thanks John! That was a lot more info than I could ingest so I'm going to use your 2nd link 'what PC to build' and go with the 'Intel i7 4930k'.
Right now, that is what I would build... of course, next year may be a different story, but there is ALWAYS something coming "next year"
The list I put together for the 4930k should work well for you
