Are you including datavisualization.swc in your compile path of the applicaiton? AdvancedDataGrid is a part of Flex Builder but not part of SDK.
FlexBuilder doesn't appear to be available for Linux (which is the platform I work on).
It's odd to me that the Flex SDK documentation includes documentation for components that are not part of the SDK but rather another product.
1) Plans to make this control part of the SDK, and/or
2) An upcoming FlexBuilder for Linux.
The Flex 3 documentation is not just for the SDK but for all of the Flex 3 framework including components that are a part of Flex Builder 3 professional (as is the Advanced Datagrid, Charts,...).
There is a Flex Builder Linux Alpha available at http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flex/flexbuilder_linux/ . This build is going to be refreshed soon and you can use it to build applications on Linux.
Thanks for your input.
Since the SDK is developed under a free software license (the MPL), but FlexBuilder isn't, it seems that users of the SDK that are looking for an open source solution cannot use things like the AdvancedDataGrid.
I notice more and more components of the "Flex infrastructure" being open sourced by Adobe (e.g. Blaze DS) and am curious to know whether AdvancedDataGrid will go the same way?
We believe that there is incredible value in the components that we offer, and for some that are more advanced and not necessarily building blocks of the framework (like the datavisualization components) we will continue to charge for them. So I would not expect ADG to go open source soon.
