You probably have some sort of frame behind it to which Text Wrap has been applied.
That is probably okay but I've deleted Masters, frames, pages and redone a few times but I still get the same results. Do you have any advice?

Peter, I went back in and looked at my file and I had a 'continuous break"
setting partway into the document. I deleted that and everything is working
fine. Must not be able to have breaks in the files!
Never heard of a "continuous break" setting. Would you care to elaborate?
The text file was a Word document and I had used the "continuous break" to
separate some one column text from two column text. I'm finding I need to
be aware of what kinds of formatting I've used in the Word documents.
I'm just learning InDesign for a couple of big projects coming up. I used
Word to help a lady publish a book a couple of years ago and it was so
unstable I swore never again. I'm doing a 50 page mockup so I have a chance
to run into all the challenges of learning a new program. I'm hoping I can
learn to use the TOC and Index features.
Thank you so much for your quick responses. It really helped to have a
"safety net' as I tried to think my way through what was going on. I'll
probably have more questions!
