1. Re: Z depth from AE 3D scene?
Dave LaRonde Jan 7, 2014 11:29 AM (in response to MikeCL)If they're 3D layers made in AE, each layer has an x,y&z position value. If they're something else, please specify.

MikeCL Jan 7, 2014 11:35 AM (in response to Dave LaRonde)Hi Dave,
Yeah, they are. The issue I'm having is trying to find a way to get the z depth information to be used as a depth map. Like a pass you normaly render out from Maya to use for dof, fog ect. but for this case it's entirely made in AE using the 3D layers. Basicly it's a matte painting separated into different layers with a 3D camera pan.

Szalam Jan 7, 2014 2:26 PM (in response to MikeCL)I'm curious why you're using AE to create a depth map. Perhaps we can figure out a different way to do what you want.
Anyway, Buena Depth Cue does what you are asking for.

4. Re: Z depth from AE 3D scene?
MikeCL Jan 7, 2014 3:02 PM (in response to Szalam)Hi Szalam,
the reason being since I'm comping using 3d plates. to be more specific of what I want to achieve is to create a fog/mist effect. And with the AE 3D fog effect it only seem to work with a depth map which is normally rendered out from Maya/Max or what ever 3D package people use. but for this project nothing is being worked on in 3D.so pretty much everything stays in Ae.
Just to be clear, this is the effect I'm looking after:
If I can create a 3D fog without using a depthmap that would be fine. That's what I thought of doing first. Seemed logic and pretty much a nobrainer that it should be an easy way of doing it since the scene is in 3D and it has all the information needed to create an effects like that without having to fake it doing workarounds. I would be super happy to not have to purchase another plugin to do something basic like this.

Greg Baber Jan 7, 2014 4:09 PM (in response to MikeCL)After Effects is not a 3D renderer - it does not create depth maps. You can file a feature request - https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

6. Re: Z depth from AE 3D scene?
Szalam Jan 7, 2014 8:58 PM (in response to MikeCL)You can apply an expression to each of your layers that makes it go greyer (or whatever color you want, I suppose) the further it is from the camera. Dan Ebberts mentions one here.

7. Re: Z depth from AE 3D scene?
Mylenium Jan 7, 2014 10:35 PM (in response to MikeCL)You have to use Digieffects Depth Cue or manual techniques based on expressions to create custom gradients, tints and opacity based on distance. Otherwise Ae has no per-pixel depth buffer.

MikeCL Jan 8, 2014 1:28 AM (in response to Szalam)Thanks for the link Szalam! I think applying the expression is the way to go here.

kiff knight Mar 20, 2014 2:24 PM (in response to MikeCL)Video copilot's 3d Falloff comes free with their presets. Great and quick for doing this. http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorial/3d_falloff/
