I can confirm this is entirely possible. What you will be able to do here is simply place a catalog behind a secure zone so that a customer will need to log into the secure zone in order to view it and thus add products to their cart: http://screencast.com/t/SpfEGfxRZIy5.

Once logged in, you could also set up a separate page where the customer can update their account details using the following feature: http://screencast.com/t/BfoOZWJVOD.
