Deleted Style Sheet Reappears When Pasting Text

I have more than 100 documents that are part of a dozen catalogs. In order to make them all consistent, I went through all of them and deleted some style sheets and created new ones to replace a few of the deleted ones in each document. This was last summer. Now I'm trying to copy text from Excel and paste it into InDesign but when I do, one of the deleted style sheets reappears in the Paragraph Styles palette and that style is used to format the pasted text. I just want it to be unformatted so I can select one of the new styles or, better yet, set it up so I can have the new style applied automatically when I paste it.

      Why is this happening?

      I'm using InDesign CS4 in Windows 7.

      Thanks!
